Questioning hegemonic structures. Development of the independent theater – and performance scene in Berlin since the 1990’s

It is noticeable that in the course of current discussions among cultural producers in Berlin – maybe too rarely? – previous accomplishments, considerations and practices are recalled and passed on in the form of knowledge.
Since the 1960s the practice of art has increasingly taken as its theme the assignation of meaning and the various modes of representation of art itself. The aim is to test models which are capable or creating anti-hegemonic, discursive spaces for a diverse public.
This involves collective and hybrid forms of production, dissemination and distribution, which, as artistic formats, call into question and transgress the conditions and exclusive mechanisms of established, bourgeois cultural institutions.
With the benefit of hindsight, Formate des WIR will look at – and back on – Berlin.

The fourth part of the  fourth event of this series is dedicated to (anti-) institutional collective production practices of performers in Berlin since the mid-90s.

In the first part of the evening, we will engage in a dialogue with the curator and dramaturge Aenne Quiñones, about the political conditions in which groups were operating and producing at the time. Which funding instruments exitsted and which of these disappeared? How did the independent scene (freie Szene) develop in these years? What was the ‚Formate des Wir’ coming from that time? In which locations? Which of these are still active today, which groups are gone, and why?
Since September 2012, Aenne Quiñones has been working as Deputy Artistic Director of HAU Hebbel am Ufer in Berlin. In 1996, she co-initiated the ‚Rich and Famous’ Festival at the Podewil in Berlin. At Podewil, as a member of the artistic direction team, she developed the programming in the field of theater / performance from 1997 to 2002.

In the second part of the event, the performers Tone Avenstroup, Janine Eisenächer and Anja Ibsch will be discussing the different organizational forms and various formats of public outreach, as well as the personal constellations and cooperation phases of the informal Performancekünstler_innen network “Performer Stammtisch”, since its inception in 2002/03. They will be doing so in a specially designed conversational form. They will be questioning existing or non-existing ‚Wirs‘ within the Performer Stammtisch. What are these ‚Wirs‘ in relation to concepts like “group” and “collective”, and how un-united is this ‚We‘? Why are exhaustion and disappointment often part of this ‚We”-experience, despite the presence of solidarity and responsibility in a self-organized group?
